This manuscript examines how specific features of a mathematics task can foster student engagement in the Standards of Mathematical Practice. The manuscript details task development, presents student engagement in the task, and links the task features to three instructional principles that teachers can employ to help EL students to be successful in mathematics. This manuscript has been accepted as an article for the NCTM practitioner journal, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.
